❚ DC UPS Systems
Data loss protection
in case of unintentional IPC shutdown
Uninterruptible DC power supply with maintenance-free long-life Supercaps
You can imagine the scenario: The IPC system was unexpectedly disconnected from the supply voltage! Due to inattention, supply lines are switched off or "plugs pulled", on which IPC systems are supplied.
THE PROBLEM:
Risk of losing valuable data
and
damage to operating system
and applications from corrupted data! |
In most cases, the "hard shutdown" of industrial PC systems initially appears to have no apparent consequences, because the operating system tries to repair the data when it is restarted. However, if this remains unsuccessful, the restoration becomes complex and expensive. In the worst case, systems have to be retrieved as part of a service call in order to set up the operating system from scratch. The threat to valuable data can be observed in many fields of application:

/// Patient Administration Systems
For example patient management systems for visits in medical environments are often shut down due to ignorance of operating personnel, without collected data being saved and operating system being shut down properly.
/// Inspection Systems
Inspection systems in service environments are also switched off "hard", since it is not immediately apparent to the user that an industrial PC system is installed.

/// Research & Laboratory Analysis
Another problem is the loss of data in processes that have to be recorded over long periods of time and due to carelessness interruptions occur again and again. The result is a repetition of the process, with the associated time and cost.
/// Operating Room & ICU
Even in operating rooms and intensive care units, where devices are usually secured against unintentional disconnection from the mains, an intelligent DC UPS can help to ensure a safe reboot in the event of faults. |

/// Payment Systems
The reliable and uninterrupted operation of electronic systems for correct processing of payments is absolutely essential. In this field of application, a DC UPS system can safely bridge both power failures and unintentional shutdowns. |
/// Power grids
Another risk factor is the quality of public power supply networks. This aspect must be taken into account, especially when systems and devices are exported to countries with unsafe networks. However, storm events could also play a far greater role in risk assessment in the future, as this statistic shows.
In many applications, there is a requirement to design the operating system and applications to be "fail-safe" in order to protect against power interruptions. This is becoming less and less possible with on-board resources of the operating system. The design of an application with provisions for an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is always a risk assessment in which "human risk" is an essential factor.
THE SOLUTION:
Compact and maintenance-free DC UPS modules provide reliable protection against unintentional shutdown and power failures. |

UPSIC & UPSIC-D
DC UPS modules for 12V and 24V applications
The compact DC UPS modules UPSIC (open frame) and UPSIC-D (DIN rail) bridge power failures of the supply voltage and ensure the uninterruptible DC power supply for 12V or 24V applications.

Long-life Supercaps (ultracapacitors) with high power density are used as maintenance-free energy storage for short and medium bridging times. These ensure a safe shutdown, data backup and, if desired, additional functions such as sending fault messages.
/// Maintenance-free energy storage
Unlike batteries, which store energy by the detour of a chemical reaction, Supercaps are based on electrophysical principles and are charged and ready for use within a very short time, operate in a wide temperature range and convince with high current-carrying capacity, power density and reliability. Due to the high cycle stability of more than 500,000 charge and discharge cycles, DC UPS systems with Supercaps are maintenance-free and have a particularly long service life. |

/// Flexible system integration
The open frame versions of the UPSIC series can be integrated flexible and space-saving into IPC systems. Do you have individual requirements? Please contact us, together we will find the best solution for your application.
/// Settings via DIP switch or UPS software
In addition to the software-independent parameter setting via DIP switch, the UPS software "UPS Control Center" is available for free download at the respective product at www.bicker.de. In case of a "PowerFail", the DC-UPS signals the supply voltage failure via integrated communication interface, so that a safe shutdown of the computer system is initiated and documents and settings are saved before system shuts down. Power-fail (PF) timers and shutdown timers can be set directly via DIP switch or software.

/// Reboot function
The built-in reboot function (UPSIC in connection with PSZ-1063) enables the system to automatically reboot as soon as the input voltage returns during shutdown or at a later time. For example, self-sufficient computer systems can be shut down in a controlled manner after a power failure and then restarted independently.
/// Maximum safety for your application
In the field of uninterruptible power supply, our DC UPS systems can be used in a variety of applications to protect low-power embedded IPCs, gateways, control technology, motors, sensors, actuators, etc. Customized solutions and adjustments for your individual application are possible on request. We will be pleased to help!

Free Whitepaper
on
DC UPS systems
and
battery technologies
The extensive white paper shows the factors and technological differences that system developers should consider when selecting and dimensioning DC UPS systems for their application.
In detail the white paper shows the technological differences and selection criteria for energy storage. Supercaps, lithium iron phosphate cells (LiFePO4), conventional lithium ion cells (LCO/NMC), pure lead-tin and classic lead gel batteries are compared in terms of numerous parameters, i.a. cell structure, safety, energy and power density, lifetime, current carrying capacity,operating temperature range, maintenance, transport, storage and initial and follow-up costs. In addition, the design and function of control and charging technology including the battery management system (BMS) are explained.
